Maryland Proton Treatment Center Monthly Update – Sept/Oct 2014

Maryland Proton Treatment CenterSeptember saw more daily change in the MPTC project. Varian, the proton therapy equipment manufacturer, continued installation of the major equipment, finishing installation of the beam transport system and doing the alignment of those components. They also continued assembly of the cyclotron inside the facility.  Part of this work was preparing a clean-room environment to assemble some of the internal components inside the cyclotron. They also prepared for the completion of the cryogenic system that will be used to cool the superconducting magnet in the cyclotron. This system is critical to the cyclotron’s performance.

The treatment rooms also made very good progress in the month of September, with the major components for Gantries 3 and 4 being put into place inside the building. In addition, the large, 26-ton, bending magnets that sit atop of each of the four gantries were put into place. Mechanical assembly of the four gantries will continue through the next several months, but all components large enough to require roof access and the large external crane have been put in place. This is a big milestone, as it will allow us to put the final radiation shielding blocks into place, closing the treatment rooms off as they will be for the rest of the center’s operation. Varian also was able to assemble the core components that will go inside of the fixed beam room, the fifth and final treatment room at the center.

In addition to mechanical assembly, Varian made great progress configuring and placing the power supplies and other cabinets and controls required to run the proton therapy system. As part of this work, their electrical contractors are hard at work pulling, terminating, testing and connecting the cables that run throughout the system. This is the single largest piece of work that will be done in the installation. The entire team is very excited about each additional step that gets us closer to bringing proton therapy to the people of Maryland and beyond.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Monthly Update – July/Aug 2014

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Proton Therapy Equipment Installation July 2014During the months of July and August, the team continued to work on the equipment installation which began in June with the installation of the cyclotron. After the cyclotron was installed, the team immediately set the precast roof planks.  These planks were set, welded, grouted and sealed to protect the equipment from the outside elements. The base plates along the beam line were set and grouted in preparation for magnet delivery. Electrical cabinets and components arrived to the site and were installed in the building. In Gantry 4, work was completed on the embed plates allowing Varian to move forward in this space with the next phase of equipment delivery.

Varian kicked the installation project into high gear during the month of August. In addition to the cyclotron installation, the majority of the beam transport system was put in place. The beam transport components are currently being aligned and connected to their cooling water supplies.

In addition, Varian was able to install the large components for Gantry 1 and 2, and begin assembly of Gantry 3.  Once Gantry 3 and Gantry 4 are completely installed, which should happen in the next month, we will be ready to seal off the roof of the building.  This will complete the work that is externally visible.

The team has also begun to put the power supply cabinets in place, and assemble the power generation components for the cyclotron itself. This is a big step towards having the system completely installed into the building.  The task which is probably the most intensive, cable pulling, is well under way, with more than 20 electricians working hard to get the miles of cable required in the system pulled, cut, terminated and tested.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Installs Cyclotron

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Installs Cyclotron

June 17, 2014 (Baltimore, Maryland) - Advanced Particle Therapy, LLC. (APT) announces the installation of the 90-ton cyclotron at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The equipment is part of the state-of-the-art system that will treat cancer patients with life-saving proton therapy.

MPTC Cyclotron Installation June 17, 2014Manufactured by Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, Calif., the cyclotron weighs 90 tons, but just 6 feet high and 9 feet wide. The cyclotron accelerates protons to roughly 100,000 miles per second or 0.61 times the speed of light, to create a beam that can precisely reach tumors, even if deeply seated and located near critical organs. This beam can also be shaped in three dimensions to avoid surrounding healthy tissues, targeting tumors with unprecedented accuracy.

To prepare the site for the cyclotron installation, the Varian rigging crew worked for more than two weeks in the back of the Center to install two massive cranes including a 400 ton “crawler” crane and a 650 ton “fixed” crane to support both the cyclotron and future gantry installations (see the MPTC timelapse video from May to watch this process).

The 400 ton crawler crane was used to erect the 650 ton fixed crane, install cyclotron and support equipment. The crawler will be used to install the gantry parts and will be tasked to remove the building’s roof caps of the cyclotron and gantry pits on a daily basis. The caps are removed to expose each pit and allow the proton therapy equipment to be installed. The 650 ton fixed crane was installed over the cyclotron pit and was used solely for the installation of the cyclotron.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Monthly Update – March/April 2014

Cyclotron ArrivalDuring the months of March and April, the team continued to inspect the building and add polishing touches. To date, much of the interior finishings have been installed.

The team now works on preparing the jobsite for the arrival of the proton therapy equipment. This will include a crane site on the side of the building, extensive logistical planning and equipment installation. The proton therapy equipment manufactured by Varian Medical Systems includes a 90-ton cyclotron which is traveling from Germany as well as four gantries, one fixed beam and a beam transport system. The team will lower each piece of the system through the roof in the treatment wing of the Center.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Monthly Update – Feb 2014

During the month of February, green screen along Poppleton Alley was installed. Inside the building, crews continue to work on punch lists (or to-do lists).

Punch lists for the exterior, first and second floors also continued on throughout the month. The balance of the third floor pre-punch list items will be completed and a formal punch list will be generated for that space.
