Maryland Proton Treatment Center Monthly Update – Sept 2013

During the month of September, the exterior of the Center received some polish. The sidewalks and pavers were poured and installed around the building and the new stairs along Poppleton Alley was completed and re-opened to pedestrian traffic.

Maryland Proton Therapy Center - Ceiling Tile InstallationInside the building, the proton therapy equipment area received attention with cable trays, light fixtures and pipe installation throughout the month.  On the first floor, ceiling grid and plumbing fixtures were completed. Low voltage devices and ceiling tile was installed. Soft flooring and doors and hardware installation also began giving the space shape and form. On the second floor, the ceiling grid and ceiling tile were put in place and flooring installation began as well. On the third floor, drywall hang and finish, prime and the first coat paint was completed and followed by the installation of the ceiling grid, ceramic tile, specialties and plumbing fixtures.

During the month of August, construction continued on both the interior and exterior of the building.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - Baltimore St installationPlacement of the brick pavers in the sidewalk along West Baltimore Street occurred followed by installation of the concrete drives along the east side of the project. Renovation work began on the Poppleton Alley ramp and drive. Foundations for the utility yard screen wall were also placed.

In the proton equipment areas, process piping and cable tray were completed, mechanical units were started, light fixtures were installed and low voltage cable was pulled. Handrails on the maintenance platforms were installed and were followed by the final coat of the epoxy floor coating.

In the rest of the building, fixtures are beginning to come in. On the first floor, prime paint, ceiling grid, and bathroom ceramic tile were installed. Plumbing fixtures, flooring as well as ceiling tile have begun.

On the second floor, drywall hang and finish, prime paint, ceiling grid, ceramic tile, and low voltage wiring were all installed.  Drywall was also installed on the southern portion of the 3rd floor and painting will begin early in the month.

During the month of July, much of the work on the Center was focused on the interior of the building.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center, Wall In the areas where the proton equipment will soon be housed, the mechanical and electrical work is complete. The team was then able to install the access floor, the trench grates and monorail beam. The monorail beam spans the entire length of the building and will be used to lift, transport and position the proton equipment during installation. The epoxy flooring in the gantry area was also completed.

The other areas of the building are taking shape as well. On the first floor, drywall installation was completed and has been primed. The installation of the ceramic tile and ceiling grid has begun in the first floor as well. On the second  and third floors, the rough-in work was completed and drywall installation has begun.

The freight elevators are now installed so the team can move construction materials more easily through the building.

On the exterior of the Center, a paver sidewalk was created along West Baltimore Street and the west driveway was graded.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - July 31, 2013

In July, the Maryland Proton Treatment Center construction site enjoyed a visit from Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley. According to local CBS station, WJZ of Baltimore, the Governor said, '“There will be people coming from all over to receive this really targeted precision cancer treatment”. Maryland Proton Treatment Center - June 2013

Site:

During the month of June, the construction reached the major milestone of permanent power for the jobsite. On the  West Baltimore Street side of the site, concrete curb placement and grading for the sidewalk began as well.

Building: Concrete Structure

At the future site of the cyclotron and gantries, the maintenance platforms and grating were installed. Epoxy flooring was completed in the cyclotron and gantry #4 areas. Installation of the cable tray in the beam transport line was completed and mechanical trench piping is on-going. At the third floor, the plumbing and electical spaces overhead were installed as well as the underground piping.

Building: Steel Structure

On the first floor, drywall installation and finishing is nearing completion. Installation of all of the elevators also continues. On the second floor, the framing and related mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation continued. Installation of drywall work at the south end of the second floor also continued. On the third floor, rough in work neared completion and drywall started at the north end of the floor.
