Maryland Proton Treatment Center - December 2012

During the month of December, the construction continued at the job site. The construction is now going vertical and the building is getting closer to finalizing the steel structure as the month closes.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Construction December 2012The Site:

The site crews replaced the permanent roadway that leads people into the site. They also connected the storm lines and inlets from the Poppleton Street alley. Additionally, the permanent gas service and power service instillation began in December.

The Building: Steel Structure

The steel erection continues in the main structure south of the site of the future cyclotron and the southwest staircase began. The placement of composite decks began on portions of the deck on levels 2 and 3 which has given the building the start of its vertical height.

The Building: Concrete Structure

In December, concrete crews placed the remainder of slab on grade. In the site of the future cyclotron, the team continued building out the interior labyrinth walls and exterior walls that form the BTS tunnel for concrete placement. The wall at the South end of the future cyclotron at the third floor level was placed allowing for the steel structure to tie into it at the south end of the building.

At the future site of the gantries, the team placed the elevated deck along the labyrinths from Gantry 2 through 4. Then, formwork, rebar and conduit work started at the gantry dividing walls as well as for labyrinth walls for gantries 1 through 3. Crews also begin forming up the exterior walls along the beam transport system line through the future fixed beam room.

At the fixed beam room, concrete was placed at the exterior north ring wall and the walls that form up the pit. Finally, the fixed beam slab on grade was placed.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - November 2012

In November, the construction of MPTC hit some major milestones with large concrete pours and the vertical structure started taking form.

The Site:

Progress was made in tying into existing utility inlets from Poppleton Alley and the rerouting of conduits.  Haskell also set up the water meter vault and related fire and water lines were connected. BGE permanent gas service installation will begin this month and continue work into next year.

The Building:

The second floor steel structure on the southern half of the site began in November as well as the second floor decking. The stairs were delivered and were put into place. At the end of the month, the steel workers began erection of the third floor and the roof steel has begun on the north end of the site. The third floor steel work is expected to be completed in late December.

In the future location of the cyclotron, the team has finished running conduits to the ESS elevated deck and the slab on grade (cyclotron foundation). The elevated deck creates a labyrinth style floor that will connect to the location where gantry one (the treatment room) will eventually be. In December, the wall that separates the cycltron room from gantry room one  will begin. To complete this  the team will be working on forming for concrete and installing rebar as well as running conduits and piping. The massive columns in the gantry rooms  have been formed, embedded and the concrete will be placed. Finally, for the fixed beam room, the basement walls and piers were placed last month.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - October 2012

Maryland Proton Treatment Center Construction 10-12The Site:

Site crews will complete the tie in of the storm line running along Poppleton Alley and the line connecting from the storm water vault into Fayette Street. Site crews will start installation of the water meter vault on the Northwest corner of the building concurrently with installation of the fire service line and the water line into the building. Work will begin on Developers Agreement 3 feeding permanent power.

The Building:

Concrete crews will form and place all grade beams by the end of the month in preparation for steel erection. The first sequence of steel is scheduled to start erecting October 22, 2012. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing crews will install underground lines following behind steel erection in preparation of the slab on grade pour. The slab on grade will begin in the middle of October.

In the concrete bunker concrete work will continue to progress. At the cyclotron work will progress with pours through the first level of wall pours. At the first floor tunnel the concrete walls will be in place and decking started for the second floor slab. In the remaining gantries crews will be forming and tying rebar for the first floor walls. The pier caps will be in place at the fixed beam. Concrete crews will continue work alongside the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - September 2012

The Site:

Drilled pier crews will complete the drilling and placing of caissons for the overall site during the month of September. Site crews will continue installing the storm lines along the West side of the storm water vault.

The Building:

Concrete crews continue forming and pouring concrete grade beams this month. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing crews continue to coordinate all piping included in both foundation and vertical concrete pours as the bunker area continues to progress. Additionally, the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades continue to install piping along the Northeast perimeter wrapping the North end of the building and connecting into the steel structure. Crews began excavating, forming and placing foundations in the steel structure. The mechanical, plumbing and electrical trades began running underground utilities in preparation of slab on grade pours scheduled for the beginning of October. The installation of the steel superstructure will begin in October.

Maryland Proton Treatment Center - August 2012

The Site:

The drilled pier crews continued drilling and placing caissons throughout the site. The caisson scope of work was 83% complete by the end of August. This month the caisson crews completed all the caissons under the concrete bunker structure and moved over to the foundations at the steel structure. The concrete subcontractor completed casting the storm vault and backfilling. The site subcontractor arrived back onsite to place the outfall pipe running north until they reached the property limits. The second tower crane was delivered to the site and erected this month.

The Building:

During the month of August, concrete crews continued excavating the perimeter grade beams of the concrete structure. This month they also placed the grade beams at gantry one and the slab on grade at the South end of the utility tunnel. The South wall of the Cyclotron was the first wall placed, followed by the Southwest Cyclotron wall. Early in the month the mechanical crews completed the testing of the underground duct and backfilled. Plumbing and mechanical crews coordinated underground piping installation within the concrete pours for gantry one. Outside of the structure crews worked on installing the underground electrical lines and processing pipes along the East and North perimeter of the building.
