University of Maryland School of Medicine and Advanced Particle Therapy LLC Break Ground on $200 Million Proton Therapy Cancer Treatment Center

The University of Maryland School of Medicine and Advanced Particle Therapy LLC of San Diego, Calif., have broken ground on a new, more than $200 million proton treatment center, bringing to Maryland for the first time the most advanced radiation technology in cancer treatment. It will be just the 12th proton treatment center in the United States, and the only one in the Baltimore-Washington region. The facility will be housed in an 110,000-square-foot building in the University of Maryland BioPark on the University of Maryland’s founding campus in Baltimore. The building will include space for retail.

BALTIMORE (WJZ)— A breakthrough for cancer treatment in Maryland. That’s what medical leaders are calling the University of Maryland’s new proton treatment center in West Baltimore.

Monique Griego was there for the groundbreaking.

Shovels are digging up hope for cancer patients.

“It represents victory. It represents courage. It represents healing. It represents life,” said Pat Tierney, cancer survivor.

$200 million cancer treatment center latest development in BioPark

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has begun construction of a $200 million proton center that will bring the latest in cancer treatment to the region and double investment in the University of Maryland's growing BioPark in West Baltimore.
University officials will join state and local officials, including Gov. Martin O'Malley, for an official groundbreaking Tuesday at the site of the 110,000-square-foot facility, which is expected to treat 2,000 cancer patients a year.

Back in the mid-1990s there was 3D-CRT (three-dimensional conformal beam radiation therapy), the first type of external beam radiation designed to “shape” the way that beams of radiation were used to treat the prostate in conformance with the actual shape of the individual prostate. Since then, when it comes to0 dealing with external beam radiation, we have gradually learned to deal with IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy), IGRT (image-guided radiation therapy), and SBRT (stereotactic body radiation therapy).
