September brought the largest trade show for the radiation oncology industry, ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology), to Atlanta.   The project team made sure that the Emory Proton Treatment Center was ready to go, installing a full site wrap that proudly displayed the future center’s logo/name.   Many in the industry came by to see the construction progress, giving the center a great boost.   Concrete continues to go up quickly, with the pit levels complete, and the walls of the treatment level of the proton therapy equipment area nearing completion this month.  

During October, Brasfield & Gorrie will continue this progress, starting to put roofs on the single story areas, and continuing the vertical construction up into the highest level of the multi-story areas.   Varian continues to have a strong presence on site, helping to verify key construction elements, and working with the design and construction teams to quickly answer questions and ensure no project delays.   The project also continues to be a boon to the local economy, with 210 jobs created to date by the project.   We are on track to see the creation of 1,050 jobs by the construction completion, and that does not include the permanent jobs created to staff and operate the Center.  So far the entire team has a lot to be proud of in Atlanta, GA. 

 

 

Emory Proton Therapy Center - August 2013

The Emory Proton Therapy Center has kept its fast pace up through the month of August. 

Site wrapping at the Emory Proton Therapy Center jobsite, Atlanta, GABrasfield & Gorrie (B&G) has been pouring concrete quickly, finishing the vertical walls and floors on the pit level of the building, and moving on to the treatment level vertical walls.  As you view the site from the webcam, you can start to see the spaces taking shape that will eventually house the proton therapy equipment, and where the patients will move through the building to get their treatment.  

In addition to forming and pouring concrete walls and slabs, B&G has also been positioning the embedded steel plates that will be used to mount the heavier pieces of PT equipment.  These have to be positioned precisely, and Varian Medical Systems has had people on site to support the process.   Varian has also been verifying conduits and other critical pathways that are part of the concrete structure itself.   With the teamwork and cooperation between B&G and Varian, questions get answered real time and the team continues to keep up the pace.

Emory Proton Therapy Center - July 2013

July has been a very busy month on the jobsite in Atlanta with a major focus on getting the concrete portion of the building in place.  The General Contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie, has completed the majority of the piles which are used to support the concrete structure of the building.

In July, the team poured the first section of the building floor, called the pile caps, moving from north to south. This layer of concrete structurally joins together all of the pilings that support the building. The concrete was also poured to form approximately half of the basement level of the building. Concrete was poured in the treatment bunker areas as well including in the fixed beam room and the floor and wall of two of the gantry rooms.

In addition to the concrete pours, the second of the site’s two tower cranes was erected.  The tower cranes allow Brasfield & Gorrie to continue to move smoothly along their construction schedule, and handle the complex logistics of building a facility this large on an urban site.

Emory Proton Therapy Center - June 2013

Construction Update

The construction for the Emory Proton Therapy Center continued on a rapid pace during the month of June 2013.
All shoring at the site perimeter has been completed including sub-surface vault areas for power transformers.  Final mass earth excavation is complete and the augercast test pile was placed and load tested. The load test exceed those require by specification. The production pile work began and is approaching the 90% completion mark in the proton treatment equipment areas.  Rebar placement and slab-on-grade is following behind the pile installation.
The tower Crane #1 is installed and operational with the second tower crane onsite and foundations prepared. The underground utilities have begun including storm water management systems, sanitary sewer and unground power.
Despite heavy daily rains in the Atlanta area, the project remains on schedule with major trades of structural steel, long-lead precast exterior skin and curtain wall are being the procurement cycle.
